The Brasenose Community was greatly saddened to learn of the recent death of our Honorary Fellow Dr James Adams CBE.
Jim left his native Australia and came up to Brasenose as a Commonwealth Scholar reading Classics in 1967. Graduating in 1970, he went on to have a distinguished career as a Teaching Fellow, Lecturer and Research Fellow at a number of institutions, including Christ's College, Cambridge; University of Reading; St John's College, Oxford and All Souls College, Oxford.
His publications included The Text and Language of a Vulgar Latin Chronicle (Anonymus Valesianus) 1976, The Vulgar Latin of the Letters of Claudius Terentianus, 1977; The Latin Sexual Vocabulary, 1982; Wackernagel's Law and the Placement of the Copula Esse in Classical Latin, 1994; Pelagonius and Latin Veterinary Terminology in the Roman Empire, 1995; Bilingualism and the Latin Language, 2003; and several others.
In 2009 he was awarded the British Academy's Kenyon Medal for Classical Studies, and he was awarded a CBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List 2015 for services to Latin Scholarship.
Jim became an Emeritus Fellow of All Souls in 2010, and became an Honorary Fellow of Brasenose in 2012.
